How it works

What "hurricane-rated" actually means here

When a storm drives debris into a glass door, two things have to survive: the glass and the frame. The MP Door is built for both.

The glass is 1-inch triple-layer Low-E glass with a protective interlayer — engineered so that even if the outer pane is struck, the interlayer holds the opening closed and keeps wind and rain out of your home. The door panel is high-density fiberglass in a full composite frame that won't rot, rust, or warp — the part of the door most likely to fail in a wet, high-pressure storm.

That construction is what earns the certification numbers above: third-party testing to ASTM E1886 and E1996, the large-missile impact and repeated-pressure standards Florida requires.

Certification & zones

Cleared for Florida's storm zones

The MP Door impact patio door is approved under Florida Building Code product approval FL29714-R15 — the statewide certification for Florida's windstorm regions. For the most demanding zone, it's also available in a configuration approved for use in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ), the tier that governs South Florida's coastal counties, including Miami-Dade and Broward.

The doors

The MP Door we built our hurricane rating around

Impact Hinged Patio Door

The MP Door is a hinged (swinging) patio door — a solid, sealed alternative to a slider for coastal homes. It's the door the FL29714-R15 approval is built around.

  • High-density fiberglass panels in a full composite frame — won't rot, rust, or warp
  • 1″ triple-layer Low-E impact glass with protective interlayer
  • Energy Star certified — lower cooling bills in a Florida climate
  • Available in a configuration approved for use in the HVHZ
  • Lifetime limited warranty

PG50 Sliding Patio Door

MP Door impact protection is also available in a sliding configuration. The PG50 Sliding Patio Door carries a PG50 performance rating, making it suited to coastal applications with higher wind-pressure and water-resistance demands — the same storm-focused engineering in a space-saving slider.

Hurricane patio door questions, answered

Is this MP Doors patio door hurricane rated? +
Yes. This MP Doors impact patio door is approved under Florida Building Code product approval FL29714-R15, is impact resistant, and is tested to ASTM E1886 and E1996, with a design pressure rating of +50/−50.
Is it approved for the HVHZ (the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone)? +
The FL29714-R15 approval includes an HVHZ-approved configuration (sub-product 29714.2), additionally tested to TAS 201, 202, and 203. The HVHZ tier governs South Florida's coastal counties, including Miami-Dade and Broward. If your project is in the HVHZ, specify the HVHZ configuration when ordering.
How do I choose the handing (swing direction) so I don't order the wrong door? +
A hinged door needs swing clearance and a handing — left or right, in-swing or out-swing. Choosing this against your actual opening is the single most common ordering mistake on patio doors, so confirm it before you buy. The product page walks through how to measure and choose. See how to measure →
What's the difference between impact glass and hurricane shutters? +
Impact glass protects the opening permanently — there's nothing to put up before a storm, so the door is always storm-ready. Shutters are a separate covering installed over a standard door each time a storm approaches.
Do I need hurricane-rated doors where I live? +
In Florida's windborne-debris regions, glazed openings must be either impact-rated or covered by an approved protection system, with the strictest requirements in the HVHZ. Your local permit office determines what your specific address requires — this is general code guidance, not a product-specific rule.
Is the approval current? +
The FL29714-R15 approval record shows Revision 15, approved 11/20/2025. Search FL29714-R15 at floridabuilding.org to see the current record.
Where do I buy MP hurricane patio doors? +
